THE Maleny State Emergency Service group has raised the rainbow flag in a powerful public show of support for diversity and inclusion, marking IDAHOBIT Day with a ceremony aimed at strengthening acceptance within emergency services and the wider community.
Held on May 17, the event recognised the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) a global day of solidarity for the LGBTQIA+ community first observed in 2005.
Maleny first marked the occasion in 2012 under the name Maleny IDAHO.
The volunteer-led ceremony was driven by Maleny SES Operations and Training Deputy Group Leader, Jared Ashcroft, and Nambour Deputy Group Leader, Ryan Whiteman, whose work helped establish the North Coast Region SES Pride Network and stage its first public event.
Mr Ashcroft, said promoting inclusivity within the SES was essential to ensuring volunteers, staff and families felt respected, safe and supported.
“By taking proactive measures, the organisation promotes a culture of support and connection, reducing the potential for discrimination,” he said.
Acting Community Engagement Officer Sharon Pedersen praised Mr Ashcroft’s leadership and dedication to creating a more inclusive emergency service culture. “Jared’s efforts have not only strengthened the SES community but have also set an example for others to follow,” she said.
Mr Ashcroft said the ceremony also recognised the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community and highlighted the continuing importance of equality and inclusion across regional communities.
