EVERY Friday morning, just before 8am, a group of women gather at Kings Beach Caloundra, boards under their arms, laughter in the air, and not a care about the temperature of the water.
They call themselves the ‘Silver Sirens’ and what started as a few friends looking for some outdoor fun has turned into a lively end of week ritual.
All are women over 55, but don’t call them “retirees at rest.” They charge into the waves like teenagers, riding the surf with whoops and cheers that rival the gulls. For them, it’s part exercise, part therapy, and all joy.
“I watched a documentary a few years ago (Granny grommets) that celebrated older women staying active, joyful, and connected and it really stayed with me.
That’s what inspired me to start the Silver Sirens.
Like many women, once the kids finish school, you find yourself looking for a new way to relax, connect, and have fun.
It’s the best way to start the weekend,” says Hinterland resident Sarah, one of the group’s founders. “You forget about everything else once you’re out there just the ocean and your friends.”
Fitness experts agree boogie boarding offers a great full-body workout, improving balance, core strength, and cardiovascular health.
But for this bunch, the real payoff is connection – something hard to find and deeply valued.
“What I love most about this group is the laughter and genuine kindness everyone brings. We’ve all lived a little, share our stories, and embraced the idea of being proudly “age positive”which truly feels like a gift”.
Silver Sirens meet Fridays at 8am on Kings beach at the Lifesaving club (beachside). It’s completely free and newcomers are always welcome.
The only rule: bring your board, bring your smile, and have a go.
Stay afterwards for a coffee and a chat at a nearby café. It’s a wonderful way to connect with community, enjoy nature, and keep moving.
