Slow down: School zones back in force across Queensland

As students return to classrooms for the start of the 2025 school year, the Queensland Government is urging drivers to take extra care, with school zone speed limits now back in effect.

Most school zones across the state operate between 7–9am and 2–4pm, while others remain active all day from 7am to 4pm. The standardised times aim to help drivers remember when to slow down and stay alert around schools.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said motorists needed to be especially mindful of young pedestrians.

“Children can be unpredictable, particularly on the first day back when they’re excited to see their friends,” he said. “We’re asking drivers to stay alert, follow the rules and always be on the lookout near schools.”

Queensland currently has more than 2,000 school crossing supervisors helping students safely navigate roads before and after school.

Parents and carers are encouraged to discuss safe travel routes with children, including how to use pedestrian crossings and traffic signals.

To further support safety education, schools will receive an updated version of the Journi road safety program this term. Designed for Years 5 and 6, the interactive resource teaches students how to make better decisions on and around the road.
