Snatch, grab and prosecute

Covert loss prevention campaign targets Beerwah business spike in shoplifting

IN a 24-hour loss prevention operation led by Beerwah Police, a dozen individuals were detained on theft and public order charges. Dubbed ‘Operation Snatch’, the campaign conducted at Beerwah Market Place on Thursday, October 31 involved plainclothes officers working alongside loss prevention staff from two local retail outlets to curb shoplifting.

The covert operation also identified three additional offenders from previous incidents using CCTV footage, resulting in a total of 17 charges, including several drug-related offences.

Leading Senior Constable Michael Collins of Beerwah Station explained that recent data analysis had revealed an increase in shoplifting within the local division.

“Addressing this issue, Beerwah Police have reinforced our commitment to reducing these offences in the area and plan to conduct additional operations in the weeks ahead,” he said.

Senior Constable Collins noted that the operation was particularly successful, though he acknowledged the impact of cost-of living pressures on the community. However, he observed that most stolen items were not essentials.

“We are always mindful of people’s circumstances, however we will not tolerate blatant theft in our community,” he emphasised.

The success of Operation Snatch marked one of the highest single-day detentions in recent covert operations for the area.

Local police will maintain a visible presence in the area, actively targeting shoplifting offenders in the lead-up to the festive season.
