AN initiative helping children improve their reading skills while surrounded by lovable dogs is looking for new volunteers. Story Dogs is a fantastic non-profit running a literacy program in primary schools Australia-wide. The program is designed to make reading fun for children, so they become confident lifelong readers. Their mission is to ensure that no child is left behind in literacy.
Maree Keating and her Golden Retriever Jasmine joined the program last year. “I can honestly say that Story Dogs is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. When children read to a dog the outcomes are amazing.” Maree said.
Volunteers must be able to give two hours per week for the school year, where they will work with the same four students. The dogs must pass an accreditation test carried out by certified Assessors and must all have annual vet checks, vaccinations, have council registrations and be clean and groomed before going into schools.New volunteers receive training.
