Sunshine Coast Launches Campaign to Promote Pathway Etiquette

With over 73 kilometers of scenic Coastal Pathway, the Sunshine Coast offers a paradise for walkers, runners, cyclists, and scooter riders alike. As the popularity of these pathways grows, so does the need for respectful and safe sharing of these spaces.

In response, the Sunshine Coast Council has launched a new campaign, “Mind if We Share – One Path Many Ways”, to promote better pathway etiquette.

Strong Community Portfolio Councillor David Law welcomed the initiative, highlighting its focus on educating users. “Through engaging signage and community outreach efforts, the campaign aims to remind users to share the path courteously, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone,” Cr Law said.

“While the benefits of our pathways for physical and mental well-being are undeniable, it’s crucial to acknowledge them as shared public spaces,” he added. “This is another example of how we’re connecting and engaging with our communities to build a better future for everyone.”

Key Rules for Shared Pathways

The campaign outlines several “golden rules” to ensure pathways are inclusive and enjoyable for all:

  • Be considerate of fellow users.
  • Keep left, whether walking, cycling, scooting, or using mobility aids.
  • Reduce speed and signal or alert others when approaching them.
  • Give way with a smile and share the path.

Cr Law emphasized the shared responsibility of all users to uphold these guidelines. “Shared pathways are for everyone, irrespective of the mode of transport, so join us in promoting responsible usage by embracing the Share the Path ethos,” he said.
