Sunshine Coast residents invited to shape region’s future

SUNSHINE Coast Council has opened public consultation on its proposed new planning scheme, with Mayor Rosanna Natoli urging residents to engage in shaping the region’s future.

Launched on Tuesday, July 15, the draft planning scheme sets out how land across the region can be used and developed over the coming decades. It covers zoning, building heights, environmental protections, transport links, housing density and more.

Mayor Natoli said the document reflected years of community feedback and planning work, and would guide decision-making on development, infrastructure and environmental management.

“This planning scheme is about delivering a liveable, connected and sustainable Sunshine Coast,” she said. “It reflects what our communities have told us they value most – protecting natural areas, maintaining our character, improving housing options and supporting economic growth.”

The proposed scheme is fully web-based for the first time, allowing residents to search by address and access interactive maps. Users can see what changes are proposed for their neighbourhood, including any zone or building height adjustments.

Among key features are:

  • Targeted zoning changes to support a greater mix of housing near jobs, services and public transport.
  • Recognition and protection of regional greenspaces and rural land.
  • Creation of 18 local plan areas, each with tailored provisions.
  • Updated mapping for coastal hazards, floodplains and climate risks.
  • Expanded industrial land to support local employment.
  • Stronger environmental protections for koalas, turtles and other wildlife.
  • New design standards aligned with the Sunshine Coast Design principles.

Cr Natoli said community input was critical in ensuring the plan met local needs.

“Whether you agree with what’s proposed or want changes, now is the time to get involved,” she said.

Public consultation is open until Friday, 19 September 2025.
