Sunshine Coast’s First ‘Smart’ Traffic Signals Set New Safety Standard

The Sunshine Coast has introduced its first set of ‘double smart’ traffic signals, setting a new benchmark for pedestrian crossings in the region.

The innovative signals, now operational in Sippy Downs, feature two pedestrian sensors. One sensor, located in the waiting area, cancels the crossing request if a pedestrian moves out of the red square. The second sensor ensures the crossing phase stays active until all pedestrians have safely cleared the roadway.

Sunshine Coast Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson welcomed the installation, emphasizing its impact on pedestrian safety.

“There’s never been a safer time to cross Sippy Downs Drive until now, connecting the residential with the health and education precincts,” Cr Dickson said.

“The upgrade was an important response to improve our community’s confidence and safety crossing a 60 km/h multi-lane road by upgrading the standard crossing which uses state-of-the-art technology.

“This project signals a green light for rolling out more smart signals across our region.”

The same technology has also been installed at Beerburrum Street in Aroona, with Council planning further expansions to enhance pedestrian safety across the Sunshine Coast.
