Teen Injured on Mt. Ngungun Despite Closure; Emergency Crews Conduct Evening Rescue

Emergency crews were called out to Mt. Ngungun on Wednesday evening (July 17) to rescue a person injured on the popular Glass House Mountain track, despite the mountain being closed to the public earlier in the week.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson confirmed that four fire crews, the technical rescue team, and additional support crews were involved in the incident that was called in just prior to 6 pm. The spokesperson confirmed that rescue crews descended the mountain around 8 pm with the injured hiker on a stretcher, who required further medical assistance.

A Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokesperson confirmed that a male patient in his teens was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in stable condition with neck and knee injuries after falling while hiking the Ngungun Summit Track.

Earlier in the week, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service announced that the mountain was closed to the public due to the high risk of a serious rockfall from the mountain’s summit. Speaking with GC&M News, a Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation (DES) spokesperson confirmed Mount Ngungun would remain temporarily closed until further notice. They said the mountain, popular with both local and visiting hikers, would reopen as soon as it was safe to do so.

“At this stage, the duration of Mount Ngungun’s temporary closure is unknown; however, members of the public are advised to monitor QPWS’s Park alerts web pages for ongoing information,” they said.
