Eternally popular Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)… who created turmoil with Spike Milligan in BBC corridors… who partied in USA with the Chaplins and Marilyn… who died young leaving hundreds of poems, 180 radio scripts and the play for voices Under Milk Wood… is the centre of a drama about his debauched and literary lifestyle with ‘wild Irish rose’ wife Caitlin!
Twelve local actors will portray a few characters each in the show: a 45-minute biographical drama by Jill Morris, followed by an abridged version of Under Milk Wood, directed by Barbara Thomas. Woven through the program will be Celtic songs sung by Melbourne musician Lynne Muir, playing an Appalachian dulcimer.
For this production, Maleny Playhouse will be in Cabaret Mode, with the audience sitting at tables on the deep stage, with their drinks, while the actors perform on the carpeted raked seating rises. Very innovative!
But then – Dylan Thomas and Caitlin did drink a lot!
