Trek for Parkinson’s 2025: Climbing for a Cure

On April 19, a determined team of 23 Australians will lace up their boots and head to Nepal for Trek for Parkinson’s 2025—a powerful mission to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease research in Australia.

Led once again by local health worker Gary, the group ranges in age from 21 to 73, all connected by a shared goal and a personal link to Parkinson’s. Among them is 73-year-old Russell McKenzie from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, inspired by his wife’s journey with Parkinson’s and her recovery, supported by the Parkinson’s Centre at Forest Glen.

The idea was born at a Parkinson’s conference at the Maroochy RSL, where Gary served as MC. The event sparked conversations and inspired action—leading to this ambitious trek to 5,416 metres in the Himalayas.

This year’s trek is a joint effort between The Silver Fox Initiative and Trek Ready Himalayas, highlighting the critical impact Parkinson’s has on both physical and mental health.

Parkinson’s is the second most common neurological disease in Australia, affecting over 150,000 people, with 38 new diagnoses daily—many under 50.
