LANDSBOROUGH wildlife rescue operators the Twinnies raised almost $30,000 in just 24 hours to prepare for the possible arrival of avian influenza in Queensland.
Twin sisters Bridgette and Paula Powers, along with their mother Helen, have operated the Sunshine Coast seabird and wildlife rescue centre for more than 25 years.
They launched an emergency fundraising appeal last week after the H5 strain of avian influenza was confirmed in other Australian states, warning they believe it is only a matter of time before the virus reaches Queensland.
Long-time supporter Jeremy established the online fundraiser, which attracted almost $30,000 within a day. The money will be used to upgrade and expand the centre’s quarantine facilities, allowing sick birds to be isolated safely from other wildlife.
The Twinnies say the new facilities are vital to help prevent the spread of infection while ensuring injured and distressed seabirds continue to receive treatment.
“It’s scary, because it will break our heart if it does hit here,” they said.
The rescuers are urging people not to handle sick or dead birds without protective equipment and instead contact wildlife rescuers if they see birds showing signs of illness.
