Upskilling commitment for First Nations communities

The Crisafulli Government is reinforcing its commitment to upskilling Queenslanders, with a focus on First Nations communities in regional areas. A $2.8 million funding initiative aims to provide training and job opportunities for former offenders, young people, school leavers, and women, equipping them with the skills needed for local employment.

The funding will support various projects, including workplace confidence development, cultural onboarding, foundation skills, mental health support, and learner driver assistance. In Far North Queensland, $484,700 will help up to 50 participants gain qualifications in areas such as:

  • Certificate III in Community Services
  • Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Marine dive certification

Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment, and Training, Ros Bates, highlighted that the initiative is part of the government’s broader focus on “The Right Plan for Queensland’s Future”. She emphasised the importance of providing First Nations people with the opportunity to train and reskill in vital industries, such as community services and local tourism in regions like Cairns.

Minister for Women, Women’s Economic Security, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson added that the government’s initiatives aim to close gaps in key areas such as life expectancy, education, and employment.

The funding will also benefit projects in Townsville, Palm Island, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Woorabinda, and Southeast Queensland. To view a full list of successful projects, visit: https://desbt.qld.gov.au/training/community-orgs/iwsdg.
