Wallace Claims Victory in Fisher, pledges to keep fighting for the Coast

Liberal National Party MP Andrew Wallace has claimed victory in the Federal seat of Fisher, vowing to continue representing the Sunshine Coast community in Canberra with renewed determination.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning, May 6, Mr Wallace said he was “deeply honoured and humbled” by the electorate’s backing, promising to remain a strong voice for Fisher despite a broader swing against the Liberal Party nationwide.

“Your vote is testament to our shared vision for a stronger, more prosperous Fisher,” he said. “I am committed to being your voice in Canberra, advocating tirelessly for the needs and aspirations of our community.”

Wallace retained the seat he has held since 2016, defying national trends that saw significant Liberal losses. Acknowledging Labor’s overall national election win, he congratulated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and praised his own campaign team for their unwavering efforts.

“I remain incredibly proud of the grassroots local campaign we ran and the values we stood for,” he said. “I simply could not have held the seat of Fisher without the remarkable efforts of hundreds of loyal LNP and community members.”

Mr Wallace also used the opportunity to reflect on the Liberal Party’s broader challenges, urging internal reflection and reform following the federal defeat.

“We must identify our mistakes and shortcomings, and we must learn from them,” he said.

Labor candidate Morrison Lakey, who entered the race late with limited resources, described the campaign as a proud milestone.

“To pick up a swing to Labor in a traditionally blue-ribbon seat is no small feat,” he said. “This was my first time running, but certainly not my last.”

Independent Keryn Jones, who mounted a high-profile campaign focused on community-driven politics, conceded the race on Tuesday morning. However, she said the result marked a significant shift in local engagement.

“We’ve shaken up a so-called safe seat, made it competitive, and inspired thousands to vote for a new kind of politics,” Ms Jones said.

As the official count continues, Wallace looks ahead to another term representing Fisher, declaring that “our work continues—indeed, it never stops, and nor will I.”
