Warnings over water safety heading into long weekend

As Queenslanders prepare for the busy Australia Day long weekend, maritime authorities are urging boaties to stay vigilant and be ready to adapt their plans if weather conditions turn dangerous.

In a joint effort, the Queensland Police Service (QPS), Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ), SEQWater, and Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) are emphasising the importance of water safety, particularly during the high-risk weather season.

To enhance safety, both QPS and MSQ will increase patrols, focusing on lifejacket use, speed limits, licence checks, and cracking down on drink and drug driving.

Between 2019 and 2024, 64 people lost their lives in water-related incidents in Queensland, with seven of the eight fatalities in 2024 presumed drownings. Only one victim was known to be wearing a lifejacket.

Boaties engaging in activities like fishing, jet skiing, sailing, or paddleboarding are reminded to check weather conditions and potential risks before heading out. Key safety reminders include wearing lifejackets, particularly in risky situations such as crossing coastal bars or boating at night, staying sober, and informing someone of your plans.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Dan Purdie, stressed that water safety is everyone’s responsibility. He urged Queenslanders to stay safe while celebrating.

Authorities are also advising to log journeys, carry sufficient fuel, and keep an EPIRB on board. If in distress, contact MRQ on 131 MRQ or call Triple Zero.
