Plastic Free July is a global campaign to encourage people to stop using plastic during July and beyond. The goal is to raise awareness about the environmental problems caused by plastic waste, and to encourage more sustainable habits.
Australians use around 150kg of plastic per person each year, and generate more single-use plastic waste per person than any other country except Singapore, making us world leaders in plastic waste.
Why is this important? 90% of plastic is made from fossil fuels, producing carbon emissions and breaking down into microplastic particles. These pollute air, water and land, meaning that now we all have to breathe, drink and eat bits of plastic everyday whether we want to or not. The health effects of this are only now coming to light.
This month, we’ll be writing about the Plastic Free July Challenge, choosing to refuse single use plastics during the month, and talking about what we can each do to replace, reduce and hopefully eliminate our use of plastic in our daily lives.
