We want to read but it’s too hard

PEOPLE want to read more but are struggling to find the time, new research shows.

A Monash University study found more than half of readers and nearly half of non-readers say they read less than they intend to.

Researchers say the solution is not more motivation, but making reading easier to fit into daily life.

Simple steps like using library apps, choosing books that match personal interests and using small pockets of time can help boost reading habits.

Lead researcher Dr Breanna Wright said people respond best to practical, low-effort strategies that feel achievable.

“To increase someone’s intention to read in the short term, showing them how reading can easily fit into their lives is the best approach,” she said.

The report aims to turn behavioural science into real-world action and encourage more people to rediscover reading for enjoyment, curiosity and connection.
