The 2024 World Science Festival Brisbane has officially kicked off, offering an inspiring 10-day program of hands-on science experiences, exhibitions, talks, and events. Delivered by the Queensland Museum, this world-class event is the only one of its kind outside of New York.
This year’s theme, For Thinkers and Dreamers, focuses on exploration and creativity, featuring an exciting line-up of science stars and interactive art and cultural installations.
Highlights include the Australian premiere of the large-scale sculpture ADA by international artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski, and the Ghost Nets of Pormpuraaw, a stunning display created by eight Pormpuraaw artists, showcasing cultural practices and creativity.
The festival also features prominent speakers such as renowned physicist Professor Brian Greene, science communicator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, and Craig Reucassel from War on Waste, who will explore modern challenges including climate change, sustainable food production, artificial intelligence, and the mysteries of deep space and our oceans.
The Miles Government has committed $9 million over the next three years to secure the future of the festival, which will run until 2027. The event is projected to generate $1.4 million for the visitor economy and will feature a regional program visiting Toowoomba, Chinchilla, Ipswich, Townsville, and Gladstone.
