Beerwah High students spoiled for choice

BEERWAH State High School has introduced multiple new sport programs for the 2024 school year, building confidence in students of all ages.
Sport Head of Department, Steve Jeffery, said the school has introduced surfing lessons and mountain biking to students, and the feedback has been successful so far.
“The kids are loving it, there’s about 17 kids in the surfing program and about 30 in the mountain biking,” he said.
“Not only is it a new activity for students to learn and enjoy, it also builds confidence and creates relationships between students from all walks of life.”
For the surfing program ‘Beerwah Boards’, students who chose to participate will go to Caloundra beaches once a week to learn the skill of surfing.
There are also theory lessons available to students, which include interactive video education.
For example, they have videos of amateur surfers and professional surfers, to show the difference between the two and how to improve the skills students may struggle with.
As for the mountain bike program, it is part of a class extension, where students learn how to mountain bike.
For the students who enjoy the sport and show potential at a competitive level, are starting to train for all school mountain biking competitions being held later this year.
The school will reassess interest next semester to possibly run another surfing program.
