Friday 16 July: The Wanderers season started again on 15 July Friday. Unfortunately, their opposition forfeited. Better luck this Friday.

Friday 22 July: Both the Whistlers and the Wanderers were washed out.

Sunday 24 July: Witta Wikings ventured to Gympie for a day of Veterans’ tennis.  The team consisted of Glenn Smith, John Bradshaw, Mal Wright, Andrew Moser, Stacy English and Cindy Harris. The tennis was of a high standard, and everyone enjoyed the day. Gympie won the day with 9 sets and 64 games, to Witta’s 3 sets and 40 games. It was a long day, and we didn’t arrive back in Maleny till well after dark. There were no major casualties apart from when Stacey and Andrew collided going for the same ball; Stacey came off second best. Witta decided that Mal was the standout of the day.

It was fantastic to enjoy some tennis under blue skies and sunshine when Witta Wompoos played Nambour Nailers. Witta fielded a competitive team of Mal, Haydyn, Tony, Andrew, Paula and Brenda to come away winners in a close match winning 7 sets 58 games to 5 sets 46 games. Haydyn brought his A game winning his 4 sets, with Brenda, and Paula close behind winning 3 out of 4 sets. Our next match is an intra club clash between Witta Wompoos and Witta Wikings, a replay of the ‘declared wash out’ earlier in the season. Let’s all hope for good weather over the next few weeks enjoying the warmth of the sun and tennis companionship.

The Range Croquet Club

Thursday, July 14 in social play, Wallace Roy and Sally Adams played golf croquet on lawn 2; Nick Cram and Helen Uhlmann beat Vince and Val Carbery in a game of association doubles on lawn 1. It was a good win. Vince and Val have been in fine form lately.

On Sunday, July 17 Kath Smith and Sally played Vince in a friendly match. Vince made it interesting by peeling as many hoops as he could with the yellow and red balls. A peel occurs when you put a non-striker ball through the hoop. Normally it is done on the croquet shot but at hoop 5 Vince put the yellow through while roqueting it. Sally played her first pass roll, in play, to make hoop one.

Both lawns were used on Sunday, July 24. On lawn 2, Stuart Craig and Wallace played three good games of golf croquet. Wallace won all three. Sarah Widin and Val played a game of doubles on lawn one against Vince Carbery and Helen Andrews, winning 15–5. Ken Barker and Nick shared the lawn with them to play a singles game which Ken won 24–10.

The open club championships began on Tuesday, July 26t. Four games have been played with two more to follow. In morning play Nick beat Vince 18–16 in a close game while Sarah beat Val 19–5. In the afternoon Val beat Vince 26–4 while Sarah and Nick played an intriguing game.

Sarah made good breaks early and ended up taking her black ball to the peg but not pegging it out. Nick, at this stage had made just two hoops. He decided that his best prospects were to peg out Sarah’s black ball which he is doing in the attached photograph. Sarah’s blue ball can be seen in the background, looking on in horror at the prospect of losing its partner. With twenty minutes to go, three hoops behind, it was a brave decision which paid off. Nick won the game 15–10.

Play days are Thursday and Sunday 1 for 1:30pm. Contact Sarah Widin for other days.

Coaching is available on Saturday mornings at 8am
