Nobody hurt as blaze destroys car, caravan

A FAMILY is grateful nobody was hurt following a Beerwah shed fire earlier today that destroyed their Landcruiser, caravan, and ‘a lifetime of tools’.

Emergency services responded to multiple triple zero calls just before 10.30am following reports of fire at the Strawberry Road property.

Owner Greg Sulzberger said although valuables including a car and caravan were lost in the blaze, he was grateful his family and dog were safe.

“The first thing I did was make sure the family and the dog were okay, and then it was a case of trying to protect the house because we knew it was too late to save the shed,” he said.

“We lost our Landcruiser, caravan, mowers, and a lifetime of tools and equipment that I’ve collected, but it’s all replaceable… it’s the human life and the pets that really matter.

“The firefighters were fabulous, they turned up in pretty quick time and it was under control before we knew it, but it’s up to us to rebuild from here.”

Caloundra Station Officer Bevan McPherson said QFES, police and ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after the fire was reported and was soon able to contain the blaze despite the risk of exploding gas bottles and other fuel.

“The shed was open in a number of places, so it made it a quick entry with our hoses, we knocked the fire down fairly quickly but there were a number of risks for us,” he said.

“There were gas cylinders inside the shed, and a car and caravan which was unsafe with the fuel and gas, but our teams were able to quickly isolate those and remove the gas cylinders from the shed.

“We also had the radiant heat from the fire spread through to the garden and to the surrounding bush area we were able to knock that down fairly quickly too.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
