Steve Irwin Way section to close for three nights

A SECTION of Steve Irwin Way at Beerwah will be closed for three nights in early September as part of the roadway’s $24m upgrade.

The road will be closed between Irwin Road (north) and Foley Road (south) between 7.30pm and 4.30am from the 5th to 7th of September.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said the closures were needed to “protect the safety of our contractors and minimise disruptions for motorists”.

“Completing this work during the day, with the volume of traffic, would be a significant challenge,” the spokesperson said.

During the closure, local traffic will be diverted along Old Landsborough Road between Railway Street (north) and Kilcoy Beerwah Road (south).

Local access to properties along Steve Irwin Way will be maintained at all times.

Heavy vehicles will be directed to use the Bruce Highway rather than the Old Landsborough Road detour.

Work is on track to complete the upgrade by the end of 2022. There were slight delays after poor weather including flooding and storms delayed some work earlier in the year.

The upgrade aims to reduce the potential for head-on, rear-end and run-off-road crashes along Steve Irwin Way between Beerwah and Landsborough by  widening and rehabilitating the road and shoulders; extending and replacing culverts; installing new infrastructure including traffic signals, dedicated right-turn lanes, lighting and safety barriers; and removing roadside hazards.
