Watch the Back of Beyond

THE Maleny Blackall Range Lions club will be showing the multi-award winning classic Australian docudrama movie, The Back of Beyond and The Last Mail from Birdsville (each approx. 1 hour in length) on Sunday July 3rd at 2.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre. 

The movie was released in early 1950 and was seen by thousands of Australians and when Queen Elizabeth 2nd saw the movie, she awarded the truck driver, Tom Kruse an MBE.  John Heyer’s 1950’s Aussie adventure film following Tom Kruse along the Birdsville Track was the winner of the Absolute Grand Prize at the 1954 Venice International Film Festival and nominated for a 1955 BAFTA film award for Best Documentary Film.

The second doco is from 2000 when Tom Kruse drove the last mail from Birdsville in his original restored truck followed by 400 people from Birdsville to Adelaide. He carried over 7000 letters.’   The mail run was owned by Harry Ding (the uncle of our Lions member Ralph Ding).
