SAN Taekwondo’s competitive junior and senior team competed in 2024’s Taekwondo Sunshine Coast Open, snagging two gold medals out of a total of 11 medals.
A particular standout from the team of 10 competitors was Kaitlyn McNulty who won a gold and a silver.
San Taekwondo club owner, Cameron Taylor, said she put up a great fight, impressing him with her tenacity.
“Kaitlyn competed really well, she won a silver in the Cadet Black Belts which is for 12 to 14 year olds, however lost her final,” he said.
“She had a chance to move up a division and compete in the Junior Black Belts for 15 to 17 year olds, and won a gold medal.”
Her sister, Ava McNulty also won a gold medal, which Cameron said was her first ‘head kicks’ fight, making it a great win for her.
Team members Aimee, Daisy, Jayda Davidson, and Lucas Mainguy won a silver medal each.
Oscar Buck won a silver and gold medal, Hudson O’Brien and Christine Bedwell won bronze medals, and Rafferty O’Brien lost their quarter final.
The event, held at UniSC was a positive experience for his fighters, Camerson said.
“Everyone is always really nice, it’s serious and competitive when the fights are on, but as soon as they step off the mat everyone is friends again,” he said.
“The Sunshine Coast Open is a good event for us to attend, there’s another event close to home in June which will be great too.”
The Beerwah and Maleny-based club owner added that he was happy with the efforts of his competitive team, but said there is always room for improvement.
“We’ve got over a month to prepare for our next Taekwondo event,” he said.
“I’m confident we will do what it takes in our training leading up to next month, ensuring we are ready and prepared.”
