BRYCE ‘showtime’ Schafer had his professional boxing debut in March, and is making a serious impact in the super welterweight division, with a 2-0 record, winning his second bout by TKO.
Bryce has been boxing since he was 13 years old after first hitting the bags in an attempt to improve his stamina. “I got into it because I was playing footy and the typical story, I just went in for fitness, and had my first spar and never went back,” he said.
“I went full on for five years and then I had a bit of a hiatus, and then I’ve been with Steve since the start of the year and I’ve found a home here at Hinterland Boxing Club and I’m loving it.”
Bryce added that he has already learnt so much from Steve and the other club’s professional boxers, such as Dana Coolwell, helping him grow as a boxer.
“I’ve been loving it,” he said.
“Steve has been teaching me things I couldn’t ever imagine, and that’s why I’m getting so much better.
“He’s been teaching me what I already know but it’s building on my skills.
“I’ve also been training with Dana and he is obviously world class so it’s been unreal to see how they do it and how professional they are with everything, it’s been helping me a lot.” The proof is in the pudding, with Bryce’s second bout ending after a minute in the first round.
The 24-year-old boxer has big dreams in the sport, one day hoping to be a world champion.
“As of this year I really just want to keep gaining momentum and obviously looking at Queensland titles, Australian titles, and obviously want to be a world champ one day,” Bryce said.
“I just want to stay busy, stay active and have as many fights as I can, I want to make a name for myself first.”
Bryce expects to have another bout in early May this year, with the potential for a Queensland title by the end of the year.
He is also aiming to move up to the welterweight division, to ensure he is fighting at a more comfortable weight.
