Story dogs makes literacy fun

MOOLOOLAH State School is welcoming its newest story dogs team to its school, thanks to sponsorship from Mooloolah IGA.
The Story Dogs Reading Program allows a handler and their dog to support children’s reading and literacy, by communicating through the handler to speak to the dog.
Dogs may ask through their handler to explain a part of a story the student is reading, or students can write to the dogs to improve their writing skills.
Mooloolah IGA store manager, Diana van Jole, said when they were approached to sponsor a story dog, they couldn’t resist.
“We think this is a great program to help kids learn how to read, what better way to do this than with a dog too,” she said.
“It really helps kids destress when they are reading at school, and Mooloolah now has three story dogs.
The store donated $550.
