Div 5 heats up as new candidates come forward

DIVISION 5 Councillor Winston Johnston will re-contest at the 2024 council elections.
Cr Johnston told GC&M News he said there was still more he wanted to achieve in the electorate, which stretches from Conondale to Woombye and south including Mooloolah and Peachester.
Greens candidate Tracey Burton has already launched her bid, while last week small business owner and freelance journalist Richard Bruinsma announced his intentions for the division.
Mr Bruinsma said he felt ‘obliged’ to run given his previous career experience and concerns over what he said was a growing gap between politicians and the people.
The former editor of the Sunshine Valley Gazette said he had been convinced to nominate by what he saw as the ever-widening gap between everyday people and politicians, his concerns of lack of action on the cost of living, and to utilise for community good his valuable experience in public life in media, politics and business.
“I know the local communities, I understand the aspirations of local people, and I feel obliged to use all my knowledge, my various skills and my commitment to people, to make a difference to the communities around where I live,” Mr Bruinsma said.
Speaking with GC&M News, Cr Johnston confirmed he would stand again, saying there was more to be done in the division.
He said a particular incentive was the retirement of Mayor Mark Jamieson, and subsequent discussions with other councillors and members of the public expressing their need for strong ongoing representation to keep things going in the right direction. Cr. Johnston said he remained strongly committed to Division 5.
“For me it’s all about doing things for the community and making the Hinterland stronger and delivering facilities to our Hinterland region,” he said.
Candidates can nominate until February 2024 ahead of the March 16 elections.
